چکیده

This study is concerned with the unsteady motion of two solid spherical particles in an unbounded incompressible Newtonian flow. The background flow is uniform and can be time dependent. In addition, the particle Reynolds numbers 2aVa / and 2bVb / , based on characteristic particles velocities Va and Vb, are assumed to remain small throughout the motion. Here, a and b denote the particle radii and is the kinematic viscosity of the fluid. Two approximate methods are employed in order to calculate the unsteady force exerted on each particle. In the first approach, a simplified method of reflections in combination with the point-force method is employed. In the second approach, a simplified method of reflections combined with Burger’s unsteady flow solution is considered. The forces due to the background flow and the disturbed flow created by the presence of particles are treated separately. The equation of motion for each particle is derived and some special cases are presented in detail including the motion with constant acceleration and the motion in a gravitational field. The results indicate that using the Basset force corresponding to the motion of two spheres gives rise to a larger drag force as compared to the solution utilizing the solitary-particle Basset force. © 2006 American Institute of Physics. NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF MAVs FLAPPING WINGS IN UNSTEADY CONDITIONS

Today, Flapping Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAV) are used in many different applications. Reynolds Number for this kind of aerial vehicle is about 104 ~ 105 which shows dominancy of inertial effects in comparison of viscous effects in flow field except adjacent of the solid boundaries. Due to periodic flapping stroke, fluid flow is unsteady. In addition, these creatures have some complexities in kin...

An experimental study of fixed points and chaos in the motion of spheres in a Stokes flow

We present the results of an investigation of a novel dynamical system in which one, two or three solid spheres are free to move in a horizontal rotating cylinder which is completely filled with a highly viscous fluid. At low rotation rates, steady motion is found where the balls adopt stable equilibrium positions rotating adjacent to the rising wall at a speed which is in agreement with availa...

Numerical simulation of hull and propeller interaction in acceleration maneuver

Prediction of a ship’s trajectory during a maneuvering motion is so important. In this study, the acceleration maneuver for a twin-screw vessel is directly investigated using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) environment and unsteady RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) solver. For this purpose, the self-propulsion and acceleration simulations with hull and propeller interaction for the well-...
